Raised in Leander, Texas, Tom Patterson completed his All-Level Certification: Music Education along with his high school diploma. As he set off for college, he had a clear direction in mind – Band Director for a middle school like Deerpark. Charting the course was simple. Much of the available market, added band director Tom Patterson, is flooded with very low cost instruments appealing to the first time instrument purchasers that do not know the difference between an instrument made with quality craftsmanship and another with low end parts and shoddy craftsmanship. To the untrained eye, these two can look identical, remarked band director Tom Patterson, the only difference that they perceive is the huge difference in cost.

The reality, band director Tom Patterson added, is that the cheap "knock-off" instruments are not made to last and will likely not even make it through the first year of playing. Many times the cost of repairs in the first year will more than make up the difference in initial cost.
The other big problem with the purchase of these inferior instruments, as expressed by band director Tom Patterson, is that many music stores will not even repair these instruments. Many music stores shy away from repairs for two reasons:

1. Many times more damage is caused through trying to repair initial damage.
2. Music stores do not want to provide any warranty on repair for an instrument that will likely go out of adjustment repeatedly at no fault to the music store.

Band director Tom Patterson believes that it is the responsibility of music educators to steer the parents of our young musicians away from these products and educate them on the value of purchasing quality equipment for the purposes of learning to master the art of performance.

Band Director Tom Patterson Discusses the Value of an Arts education in the “Real” World

Recently, Deerpark band director Tom Patterson offered some advice about the practicality of an arts education in today’s job market. Tom Patterson said the business world needs professionals with an education in arts and music. Tom Patterson himself is a middle school band director with a formal arts education. Band director Tom Patterson said there are dozens of specialized industry jobs ranging from recording engineers to product designers that require talented people with solid backgrounds in the arts.

The study of art and music, continued band director Tom Patterson, is not merely a pastime or hobby just for the sake of personal development. Patterson said well educated, talented musicians and artists are in high demand. Admittedly, said the Round Rock band director, much of the work being done in the arts on a professional level is more technical than it is performance-based. He said, however, that aspiring artists should not be discouraged by this market reality. Band director Tom Patterson said to view this reality as an opportunity to increase the awareness of the value of arts and music at all levels of our society.

Band director Tom Patterson added that art and music have many manifestations in the marketplace. On the obvious level, began Tom Patterson, musicians are constantly recording albums for release into the pop music market. But musicians operate on many levels, said Tom Patterson. The band director explained that musicians could be found writing and performing advertising jingles, producing music for television broadcasts, and even working on movie scores.

Furthermore, said band director Tom Patterson, visual artists thrive in the industrial sector, too. Artists with formal training in design, noted Patterson, are doing everything from producing product logos to drafting building plans. Many accomplished artists, like band director Tom Patterson, work as educators, both public and private. Others find work as landscape architects designing parks and children’s play areas. Tom Patterson pointed out that other formally educated artists become graphic designers, generating slogans and logos for some of the world's most important corporations.

Tom Patterson, the band director at Deerpark Middle School, also said that professional artists and musicians thrive on the local level. Tom Patterson described artists providing services for individuals and small businesses in their very own communities. The next time you think of art education as an elective hobby, concluded band director Tom Patterson, stop to consider some of the things discussed above. Upon reflection, readers will learn that art thrives everywhere, from the classroom to the boardroom.
